How to Use Your Webcam to Take Photos and Record Video
Money, health & time · October 19, 2026 · 1 min read
Sometimes you just need a quick profile photo, a check that your camera works before a call, or a short clip for a form. Your browser can use the camera directly, so there's nothing to install and no account to make.
Taking a photo
- Open the Webcam Capture and press Turn on camera. Allow access when asked.
- Check the picture. Face a window or a lamp, because light from behind turns you into a silhouette.
- Press Take photo. Take as many as you like, then save the ones you want as PNG files.
If you need a smaller file for an upload, run the photo through the Image Compressor.
Recording a video
Use the Record a video section lower down. Tick Record sound too if you want your voice. You can pause and resume, and the clip is saved as WebM or MP4 depending on your browser.
Mirror or not?
A mirrored preview feels natural, like looking in a mirror. The mirror option also flips saved photos, so text behind you reads the right way round. Turn it off if you want the picture exactly as other people would see it.
Fixing common problems
- Black picture: another app is probably using the camera. Close video call apps and try again.
- Wrong camera: use the Camera list to switch between front and back, or check which device the browser chose in its address bar settings.
- Permission declined: click the lock icon beside the address, allow the camera, and reload the page.
- Dark or grainy: add light in front of you. Cameras do better with a lot of it.
The camera light goes off when you turn the camera off or close the page. Photos and video stay on your device.
