Markdown Cheat Sheet: Syntax You Will Use Every Day
Writing & text · October 17, 2026 · 1 min read
Markdown is a way of writing formatted text using ordinary characters. You type a few symbols, and software turns them into headings, lists and links. It is used on GitHub, in documentation, in notes apps and in many blogs.
Text formatting
**bold**makes bold text.*italic*or_italic_makes italic text.~~strike~~crosses text out on most platforms.- Wrap a short piece of code in single backtick characters to format it as code inline.
Headings
Put one to six hash signs at the start of a line, followed by a space. One hash is the biggest heading and six is the smallest.
# Main title ## Section ### Sub-section
Lists
- Bullet item - Another item - Indented item 1. First step 2. Second step
Links and images
[Link text](https://example.com)
An image is the same as a link with an exclamation mark in front. Always fill in the text in square brackets, because it is read aloud for people who can't see the image.
Code blocks and quotes
```js
console.log("hello");
```
> A quoted line starts with a greater-than sign.Tables
Tables use pipes and dashes, and colons in the divider row set the alignment. They are tedious to type by hand, so build one in a grid with the Markdown Table Generator, or paste cells straight from a spreadsheet.
