Lorem Ipsum and Placeholder Text: When and How to Use It
Writing & text · October 17, 2026 · 1 min read
Open almost any website template and you'll find Latin-looking text that starts with Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet. Designers use it to show how a page will look before the real words exist.
Where it comes from
Lorem ipsum is scrambled text adapted from a work by the Roman writer Cicero, written in 45 BC. Printers have used it since the 1500s. It is useful because it looks like real language, with words and sentences of natural lengths, but it says nothing, so nobody gets distracted reading it. The words are real Latin, chopped and shuffled, which is why a Latin speaker may spot a few familiar ones.
When it helps
- Checking how a layout handles different amounts of text.
- Testing fonts, line lengths and spacing.
- Showing a client a design before the copy is written.
- Filling a template so a page doesn't look empty.
The Lorem Ipsum Generator makes paragraphs or words, in plain text or HTML, up to thousands of words.
When it hurts
Placeholder text can hide problems. Real headlines are longer and messier than neat Latin, and real pages have empty fields, very long names and numbers. A design that only works with perfect filler may break on launch day. Use real content as early as you can, and never publish a page with lorem ipsum still in it.
Realistic sample data
- For forms and tables, create names, emails, dates and addresses with the Mock Data Generator.
- For characters in a story or test accounts, try the Random Name Generator.
- For short labels or game prompts, the Random Word Generator gives real words of a length you choose.
Fake names and emails made by these tools are invented, so a result can match a real person by chance. Don't use them to contact anyone.
