Frequently asked questions
How do I add VAT to a price?
Multiply the price by 1 plus the rate. At 20 percent, multiply by 1.2, so 100 becomes 120.
How do I take VAT out of a price?
Divide the price by 1 plus the rate. At 20 percent, divide by 1.2, so 120 becomes 100. Taking 20 percent off 120 gives the wrong answer, 96.
Are the rates up to date?
The buttons show common standard rates, but rates change and many goods have reduced rates. Always check the rate that applies to you.
Is it the same for VAT, GST and sales tax?
The maths is the same. They differ in who collects the tax and how it is shown on prices.
