Frequently asked questions
How are authors written in APA?
Last name first, then initials: Smith, J. Two authors are joined with an ampersand: Smith, J., & Lee, M. From three to twenty authors are all listed. Past twenty, the first 19 are listed, then three dots and the last author.
What if there is no date?
APA uses n.d. for no date. Leave the year empty and the reference shows (n.d.).
How should titles be written?
In sentence case for web pages, books and article titles, which means only the first word and proper nouns are capitalized. Type them that way, because the tool doesn't change your capital letters.
How do I cite a DOI?
Paste the DOI in any form. It is written as a link, like https://doi.org/10.1111/example, and that replaces the web address for journal articles.
How does the in-text citation work?
It is the author's last name and the year in brackets, like (Smith, 2021). Two authors use an ampersand, and three or more use et al. Add a page number to include it.
