Frequently asked questions
What is the Flesch Reading Ease score?
A score from about 0 to 100 based on sentence length and word length. Higher is easier. Plain English sits around 60 to 70, and most web writing aims for 60 or above.
What do the grade levels mean?
Flesch-Kincaid, Gunning Fog and the Automated Readability Index estimate the US school grade needed to understand the text. A grade of 8 means an average 13-year-old could follow it.
How can I make my writing easier to read?
Use shorter sentences, everyday words, and active verbs. Break long paragraphs and cut filler. The two biggest levers are sentence length and the number of long words.
Are the scores exact?
They are estimates. The formulas were designed for English and count syllables by rule, so unusual words can be miscounted. Use them to compare drafts, not as a grade.
